Line of Sight, 2019

An exhibition at the Junta de Freguesia, Povoa de Santa Iria, Lisbon, Portugal from May 17 - June 23, 2019, curated by Cecilia Escudeiro.

In my scholarly exploration, I concentrate on the phenomenology of ambulatory practices that engage with geographically diverse yet conceptually linked terrains, such as riverine landscapes in Hawaii and littoral expanses in Portugal. Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach that encompasses cartography, photography, and illustrative arts, I generate what may be termed as 'secondary images.' These images dislocate conventional perspectives by introducing a complex interplay of fields—from action and research methodologies to media investigations. When these pieces are curated within a gallery setting, they enter into a dialogic spatiality, thereby fostering intricate relationships among themselves. The act of walking, in this context, transcends its apparent simplicity to become a multifaceted construct imbued with layers of personal histories, intricate webs of social and spatial entanglements, and nuanced configurations that serve as semiotic carriers. This elevates the act of walking to a politically charged gesture, the implications of which are contingent upon the geographical locus, the accompanying individuals, and the chosen trajectory. Thus, walking becomes an act of subversive cartography, a method through which I negotiate my own complex sense of place, deeply enmeshed in a tapestry of historical narratives, untold stories, and enigmatic occurrences.
